RESEARCH

The research program of IOTA addresses the full range of blinding diseases in West Africa.

The scientific planning is submitted for review to a scientific committee composed of independent personalities.

On a thematic point of view, all main blinding affections found in Africa (cataract, trachoma, glaucoma, infections, xeropthalmia, onchocerciasis) are frequently approached in 3 ways :

  • the clinical research inside the Institute itself
  • the epidemiological research, in the field, very often outside of Mali
  • the operational research, developed more recently, which is provided to place were problems need analysis followed by decision taking.

The training research is ensured by ophthalmologists specialised in epidemiology, biostatistics and public health. The methodological aspects (randomisation, bias control…) are therefore approached with the utmost rigor, implying the giving up of the project if not all warrantees are met.
